Maintenance of Power Capacitor

The following points to be noted for maintenance of capacitor.

  • Check tightness of connection periodically
  • Use harmonics analyzer for analysis of harmonics due to non – linear load
  • If non – linear load increase significantly, harmonic study is done
  • If harmonics are present, de-tuned capacitor banks ( reactor ) must be considered

Protect capacitor against over load and short circuit

Use of HRC fuse or MCCBs for short circuit protection of capacitor

  • The cable for short circuit protection should be selected such that it protects capacitor for 1.5 times the rated current.
  • The HRC fuse does not protect capacitor against over load, it is used only for short circuit protection.
  • The rating of HRC fuse should be 1.6 to 1.8 times that of rated capacitor current. HRC fuse does not use for switching of capacitor.

Torque

Torque

  • It is defined as the force that gives rise to rotational motion. It is equal to force times radius through which it acts.

       T = F × r

      Where

      T = torque ( Newton meter or Lb – ft )

Advantages Gas ( Nitrogen ) Filled Cable over solid cable

 Gas Pressure Cables

  • The external pressure cable is designed by Hochstadter, Vogel and Bowden.
  • This cable is triangular shaped instead of circular shaped and thickness of lead sheath is about 75% of that of solid cable.
  • The triangular section reduces weight of cable and gives low thermal resistance.

Compare Oil filled cable and Solid cable

Solid cable

Oil cable

As the thickness of insulation is more, the size and weight of the cable is more

As the thickness of dielectric ( insulation ) is less, the size and weight of the cable is less

Less current carrying capability

As the thermal resistance of the cable is less, heat dissipation increases and this will result in current carrying capacity increases

Construction of Single core LT cable

A cable may be single core / multi core depends upon type of service for which it is employed. The LT cables are used for voltage rating up to 1,000 V.

Single core LT cable

Core

  • It consists of single circular core at the center of the cable.
  • It is made of stranded copper / aluminum conductor.
  • It may be also solid aluminum / copper conductor.

Insulation

  • This core is insulated by layer of impregnated paper or varnish cambric over it.

Lead Sheath

  • The insulation is covered by lead sheath.
  • The function of the lead sheath is to protect core against moisture.

Bedding

  • The metallic sheath is protected against corrosion by using fibrous material or hessian tape.

Armouring

  • The single core cable is not provided with armouring in order to avoid armoring loss in the cable.

Why armouring is not used in the single core LT cable?

In order to avoid excessive armoring loss

Construction of H type cable and SL type cable

Screened cable

The screened cables are used for voltage up to 33 kV, but it may be applicable for 66 kV also. There are two types of screened cable : H type cable and SL type cable.

H type cable

  • This type of cable is first designed by H. Hochstadter therefore it is called as H type cable.

Belted Cable

Belted cable ( Multi core cable )

  • The multi core cable is used for voltage rating up to 11,000 V.
  • It is belted type cable consists of circular shaped / oval shaped / sector shaped.
  • Each core of multi core cable is wrapped by impregnated paper insulation.

To perform short circuit test on single phase transformer

Significance

The short circuit on the single phase transformer is performed in order to find out equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer. This test is performed to find out

  • Copper losses at full load as well as any load
  • Equivalent impedance as referred to primary (Z01) or secondary side (Z02)

Capacitor connection at LT side of Transformer

  • The power factor compensation can be provided either LT or HT side of the distribution transformer.
  • The electricity board measured power factor at the HT side for penalty calculation.
  • The power factor compensation provided by the HT capacitors and LT capacitors.
