Active Power , Reactive Power and Apparent Power

Active Power
  • It is defined as the product of RMS voltage, RMS current and cosine of angle between voltage vector and current vector.

       P = VI Cos F
Reactive power
  • It is defined as the product of RMS voltage, RMS current and cosine of angle between voltage vector and current vector.

       Q = VI Sin F
Apparent power
  • It is defined as the product of RMS voltage, RMS current.

       S = VI
Therefore
S = Ö P2 + Q2
   = Ö P2 + Q2
   = Ö ( VI Cos F )2 + ( VI Sin F )2
    = Ö ( VI )2 ( Cos2 F + Sin2 F )
   = VI
