Greening of Islands

• The government of India, Ministry of power (MoP) and Ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) has initiated program – Greening of islands.

Objective of Greening of Islands Program

• The main objective of greening of islands program is to convert power source of Andaman and Nicobar Island and Lakshadweep islands into 100% renewable sources.
• The National institute of wind energy has carried out Meso scale based data analysis and identified few locations of Andaman and Nicobar island for wind power projects. 
• The NIWE has installed sound detection and ranging (SODAR) device at Guptapara, A & N island to know wind energy potential in this region.
